Italy to host 2016 Inas World Indoor Athletics Championships

FISDIR – the Italian Federation of Sports for Intellectual and Relational Disabled – and World Intellectual Impairment Sport – the International Federation for sport for athletes with an intellectual disability – are proud to announce that the 2016 Inas World Indoor Athletics Championships will take place in Ancona, Italy.

With the local support of Anthropos, one of the 350 team affiliates to FISDIR, Italy will host the prestigious event from 11th to 13th March 2016. The event will take place in the Ancona Palaindoor, the number one indoor athletics complex in Italy. The World Championships will have support from the Marche Region, the Ancona District, the Ancona City and from the Italian Paralympic Committee.

More than 100 athletes will compete in the Championships with Portugal looking to build on their success of eight golds and 25 medals in total at the 2015 European Championships with some more strong performances. They are likely to face tough competition from Poland though who finished top of the 2014 World Championship medal table, in addition to strong teams from France and Russia.

Nelio Piermattei, a member of the local organizing committee and FISDIR Governing Board member said of winning the candidature: “After the success of hosting the 2005 European Championships, Ancona is ready to organize another important event such as the 2016 Inas World Athletic Indoor Championships. The event will be a great opportunity to support the development of sports for intellectually disabled and the spread of the Paralympic culture of integration and socialization. Our thanks goes to the Inas Governing Board for giving us this opportunity, I’m sure that Italy is ready to face this important challenge”.

Nick Parr, Inas Executive Director said “Italy have been great supporters of the Inas sports programme for many years now and with proven success at delivering events, we are excited to be able to award the event to FISDIR. The 2014 World Championships saw 12 different nations winning medals, with the 2016 event looking set to be just as competitive.”

World Intellectual Impairment Sport launches Global ID Sports Day (12.06.2015)

World Intellectual Impairment Sport is delighted to announce the launch of Global ID Sports Day: an opportunity for people around the world to come together to celebrate participation and excellence in sport for people with an intellectual disability.

In its inaugural year the event will take place on Friday 12 June 2015 – exactly 100 days to go until the 2015 World Intellectual Impairment Sport Global Games in Ecuador. The day aims to raise the profile of World Intellectual Impairment Sport, its members and celebrate the success of athletes with an intellectual disability across the world.

World Intellectual Impairment Sport hopes that Global ID Sports Day will become an exciting annual focal point in the calendar using the scale of multiple events and activities to raise awareness, and harness corporate and media support for its members and athletes.

World Intellectual Impairment Sport /IPC joint working group member wins Scientific Award

mactavishProfessor Jennifer Mactavish is to receive the International Paralympic Committee’s (IPC) 2015 Paralympic Scientific Award in recognition of the role she played in the re-inclusion of athletes with an intellectual impairment into the Paralympic programme.

The Canadian who is the Dean of the Yeates School of Graduate Studies at Ryerson UniversityCanada, will receive her honour at the VISTA 2015 Conference in Girona, Spain, which runs from 7-10 October.

The award is given biennially to an academic researcher for his or her contributions to research in the field of sports for persons with an impairment, and it serves to promote and encourage further study in this area.

Amaury Russo, President of World Intellectual Impairment Sport congratulated Professor Mactavish on her achievement “This announcement is the latest in a series of  awards given to the joint World Intellectual Impairment Sport-IPC working group and its members, in recognition of their work to re-include athletes with an intellectual impairment in Paralympic competition. It reinforces once again the importance of the collaboration, and recognises the personal contribution made by Jennifer and her colleagues in pursuit of fairness”.

“I am delighted and humbled to be the recipient of the 2015 Paralympic Scientific award,” said Professor Mactavish. “This tribute rightfully belongs to a dedicated community of academics, graduate students, coaches and sport federations from around the world, who have worked together over the years to address a complex question that unanswered would continue to exclude athletes with intellectual impairment from showcasing their talents at the highest level of sport.

“I am very proud of what we have accomplished, and particularly so for the athletes who can again dream of representing their countries as Paralympians!”

For the last 20 years, Professor Mactavish has been an expert in the field of persons and athletes with an intellectual impairment and spent 15 years spearheading the research to get athletes with an intellectual impairment re-introduced to the Paralympic programme.

 

Sir Philip Craven, IPC President, said: “I would like to congratulate Professor Mactavish who has spent her entire life in the pursuit of equal opportunities for all on winning this award. The reintroduction of intellectually impaired athletes back into the Paralympic Games was the outcome of a unique and excellent collaboration between sports governance and the scientific community.

“Professor Mactavish played a significant role in that reintroduction and every single athlete with an intellectual impairment who competed at London 2012 and who will line-up at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games should be thankful for her tremendous contribution.

“She is a worthy winner and I look forward to presenting her with the award at October’s VISTA 2015 conference in Girona.”

World Intellectual Impairment Sport Eligibility Workshop & IPC Classifier Training Event

World Intellectual Impairment Sport and IPC will jointly host an eligibility and classifier training event (swimming and athletics) in Macau, China. Delegates may attend either one or both parts of the course.

2015 World Intellectual Impairment Sport World Alpine and Nordic Skiing Championships open in Sweden

5199167745_ecaa441fb9_bThe 2015 World Intellectual Impairment Sport World Alpine and Nordic Skiing Championships  – an event for athletes with an intellectual disability – begin today in Lovsjo, Sweden, with 10 nations competing over 5 days of competition.

After an opening ceremony, the event begins with the Men’s and Women’s Race Slalom for the Alpine skiers, whilst Nordic skiers will face the grueling 5km (women)/10km (men’s) cross country event.

Races will be streamed live over the internet and results can be found on the World Intellectual Impairment Sport website at the event website (link below).

Nordic Skiing has been identified by the International Paralympic Committee as the first winter sport to be offered to athletes with an intellectual disability within the Winter Paralympic Games programme and World Intellectual Impairment Sport is working with the IPC to achieve this at the earliest opportunity.

Winners of 1st World Intellectual Impairment Sport Awards revealed

The winners of the 1st World Intellectual Impairment Sport Awards have been revealed in an exciting and emotional ceremony in Sheffield, Great Britain.

Swimming_TANG_Wai_LokTableTennis_WONG_Ka_ManIn a double sweep for Hong Kong, Ka Man Wong was voted Best Female Athlete whilst teammate Wai Lok Tang took the Best Male Athlete. Ka Man, table tennis, won gold in the 2012 Paralympic Games after winning the Women’s Singles Class 11 and then gold again in the 2014 Asian Para-Games held in Incheon, Korea whilst Wai Lok (17) is a talented swimmer who also competed at the London 2012 Paralympic Games. He took a further silver medal at the 2014 Asian Para Games taking the Asian Record of 200M Freestyle.

He has taken a number of gold medals in World Intellectual Impairment Sport competition and is ranked in the top 3 in both Asian and World competition.

paul burnsIn the Unsung Hero Category, Paul Burns MBE (UK) was the winner. Paul retired as GB Athletics Team Manager in 2014 after 12 years in the role – during which time he coached and managed many GB athletes to international success in World Intellectual Impairment Sport competition.

The final award category was the World Intellectual Impairment Sport Hall of Fame recognizing the lifetime achievement of an individual. In fact, World Intellectual Impairment Sport inducted 3 members – its former Presidents Bernard Atha CBE (UK), Jos Mulder (The Netherlands) and Dr Bob Price (UK) – in hour of their outstanding efforts to promote sport globally for athletes with an intellectual disability.

Amaury Russo, World Intellectual Impairment Sport President, congratulated all the finalists and winners “Sport for athletes with an intellectual disability does not enjoy the same media profile as other areas of para-sport so I am delighted that World Intellectual Impairment Sport has introduced these awards to honour and recognize the outstanding achievements of athletes and those who work behind the scenes”.

Former Presidents to attend 1st World Intellectual Impairment Sport Awards

Mulder J.Bernard Atha Bob Price_133x200World Intellectual Impairment Sport today confirmed that former President’s Bernard Atha CBE (Great Britain), Jos Mulder (The Netherlands) and Dr Bob Price OBE (Great Britain) will this weekend attend the 1st World Intellectual Impairment Sport Awards taking place in Sheffield, Great Britain.

All have played an influential role in the organization over its 29 year history – guiding its development and growth into an International Federation, managing the organization in the years following the exclusion of athletes with an intellectual disability from Paralympic sport, and overseeing their successful re-inclusion in the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

They will join delegates from the World Intellectual Impairment Sport membership together with local guests from the Sheffield areas to celebrate sport for athletes with an intellectual disability.

Amaury Russo (Brazil), World Intellectual Impairment Sport President explained “This is a wonderful opportunity to not only recognize outstanding athletic achievement, but also the people who often work behind the scenes to make it possible. To do this in the presence of our former Presidents – all of whom played such an important role in making the Federation what it is today – makes this evening particularly special for everybody attending”.

Inas announces finalists in 1st Inas Awards

Inas, the International Federation for sport for athletes with an intellectual disability within the Paralympic movement has today announced the shortlisted nominees for the 1st Inas Awards which take place in April.

The Awards are a new event recognizing the achievements of athletes with an intellectual disability and the many people who support support them.

For ‘Best Male Athlete’, the shortlisted finalists are Lenine Cuhna (Portugal) and Wai Lok Tang (Hong Kong).

Swimming_TANG_Wai_LokLenine has collected an incredibleCunha-Lenine_London-2012 163 international medals in a 14 year career and is the World Record holder in both Heptathlon, Indoor Pentahlon and Triple Jump.

 

At 17 years of age, Wai Lok is an established international swimmer holding a number of Asian records including 200m Freestyle.

 

2012 London Paralympics - Day 2 - SwimmingTableTennis_WONG_Ka_ManFor ‘Best Female Athlete’, the finalists are Bethany Firth (Great Britain) and Ka Man Wong (Hong Kong).

Bethany was a 2012 Paralympic gold-medalist in the 100m Backstroke and competed in the recent Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Ka Man, table tennis, is ranked 7th in the world and no. 2 in Asia.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony on 11th April in Sheffield, UK, where the winner of the ‘Unsung Hero Award’ – an award that recognises the contribution made by volunteers and coaches will also be confirmed.

Finally, Inas will induct its first member to the Inas Hall of Fame which recognises a lifetime achievement in sport for athletes with an intellectual disability.

Amaury Russo, Inas President congratulated the shortlisted finalists. “Over the past few years, the performance of athletes with an intellectual disability has increased significantly and the Inas Awards are a long-overdue recognition of their achievements. I look forward to announcing the winners in April”.

The Awards are the first such event, and are expected to be held every two years to coincide with the Inas General Assembly. More than 14 nominations were received in the first year.

Inas sanctioned 2015 Ivor Burge Championships ready for Tip Off

The Ivor Burge Basketball Championships are the National Open-Age Championships for athletes with an intellectual disability in Australia.

The men’s division will also feature a guest team from Japan, who will face the Australian Boomerangs at the completion of the Championships. The clash marks the next step of preparation for the teams in their path to the 2015 Inas Global Games. The Boomerangs finished fourth and Japan sixth at the 2011 Global Games and Australia most recently placed third at the 2013 World Championships in Turkey.

The Ivor Burge Championships takes place in Melbourne 22-28 February and sees 8 men’s teams and 5 women’s scheduled to compete in a fierce field of competition. The Boomerangs’ match against Japan is scheduled to take place on Sunday 1st March, 1PM on the show court of the Dandenong Basketball Stadium.
