Inas sanctioned 2015 Ivor Burge Championships ready for Tip Off

The Ivor Burge Basketball Championships are the National Open-Age Championships for athletes with an intellectual disability in Australia.

The men’s division will also feature a guest team from Japan, who will face the Australian Boomerangs at the completion of the Championships. The clash marks the next step of preparation for the teams in their path to the 2015 Inas Global Games. The Boomerangs finished fourth and Japan sixth at the 2011 Global Games and Australia most recently placed third at the 2013 World Championships in Turkey.

The Ivor Burge Championships takes place in Melbourne 22-28 February and sees 8 men’s teams and 5 women’s scheduled to compete in a fierce field of competition. The Boomerangs’ match against Japan is scheduled to take place on Sunday 1st March, 1PM on the show court of the Dandenong Basketball Stadium.

Inas sanctioned 2015 Australian Tennis Championships begin

IMG_8171As the semi-finalists in this years Australian Open Tennis were being decided in Melbourne today, the competition for players with an intellectual disability got underway with 33 players competing for both singles and doubles titles.

For the second time, the event is sanctioned by Inas – the world governing body for sport for athletes with an intellectual disability – and runs in parallel to the Australian Open.

Kelly Wren will be looking to extend her undefeated run of games and her 18th consecutive title, while in the Men’s two-time champion Archie Graham will be looking for his third straight title. Both Graham and Kelly started well with wins in all games played today.

Tennis is a sport that is growing rapidly within the Inas programme with a number of sanctioned events complementing the annual World Championships. Later in 2015, the sport is one of nine to feature in the 4th Inas Global Games that take place in Ecuador.

Nick Parr, Executive Director of Inas explained “Until 2013, many of Inas’ tennis players had just one international opportunity each year, however by partnering with existing national championships such as this one organized by Tennis Australia, we have been able to increase the number of competitions which has lead to an increase in players”.

The 2015 event takes place at Melbourne Park and concludes on Saturday.

The New Year Honours list recognises the achievements and service of extraordinary people across the United Kingdom and we would like to congratulate Jan on her well-earned recognition.

Inas President Attends Russian Paralympic Committee Award Ceremony

IMG_0031Amaury Russo, Inas President was a guest this week at the Russian Paralympic Committee annual IX Return to Life Award Ceremony, honouring outstanding achievements of Russian athletes, coaches, medical and support staff as well as other contributes to the success of Russian National Team at the major international competitions in 2014.

In conjunction with the Award Ceremony, the Russian Paralympic Committee officially opened their new head-quarters in Moscow which is completely adopted for persons with disabilities and has all necessary facilities for developing Paralympic sport in Russia

Inas is delighted to announce the launch of the Inas Awards to recognise the outstanding achievements of para-athletes with an intellectual disability and those who work tirelessly to support them.

Rules:
Nominations are only accepted from Inas member organisations. To make a nomination please use the form below. Member organisations can make up to 2 nominations per category and should be based upon performances and achievements between 1st January 2013 and 31st December 2014. Nominees for the Inas Hall of Fame should demonstrate a long-standing commitment to sport for athletes with an intellectual disability. Nominees for the athlete awards should be registered on the Inas Master List. By making a nomination, nominees grant Inas permission to use photos/videos and relevant quotes in future promotion.

 

Inas will make every effort to meet the travel expenses of winners attending the event however this cannot be guaranteed.

 

Delegates attending the Inas Conference and General Assembly will receive a complimentary ticket to attend the event. For anyone else who wishes to attend the event, tickets can be purchased online here.

 

The closing date for nominations is midnight (GMT) on 9th January 2015. Winners will be contacted no later than the end of January.

 

1 year countdown begins to 2015 Inas Global Games

September 20th 2014 marks exactly 1 year until the opening ceremony of the 2015 Inas Global Games which takes place in Guayaquil, Ecuador in 2015. 

The Games take place every four years and provide elite competition in 8 sports. More than 1,000 athletes representing 40 nations are expected to compete.

Saudi Arabia are Inas World Football Champions

Saudi Arabia overcame South Africa today in the final of the 2014 Inas World Football Championships, winning 4-2.

They become the first team to win the competition three times.

South Africa and Saudi Arabia into Inas World Football Championships Final

10492109_1467586930178983_403274487642601027_nAfter the semi-final stage of the 2014 Inas World Football Championships in Sao Paolo, Brazil, it is South Africa and Saudi Arabia who will contend Saturday’s final.

South Africa overcame the 2012 European Championships runners-up Poland in a tightly fought contest which was tied 1-1 after full time. A penalty shoot out eventually saw South Africa win 5:4 whilst Saudi Arabia beat Japan 3:1 in the other semi-final. The two teams met at the group stages – a game that reigning champions Saudi Arabia won – but the final is expected to be a much more competitive match.

The final takes place at 1500 hours on Saturday, following the 3rd place play-off between Poland and Japan which begins at 10am.
