We would like to extend our condolences to the families and friends of two important people in the Virtus family, Nicholas Hum (AUS) and Mats Hamberg (SWE) who passed away recently.
Nicholas was a talented basketball player representing the Australian Boomerangs at the 2011 Virtus Global Games in Italy and went on to represent Australia at three Paralympics Games and five World Para Athletics Championships. In 2024 he competed at the Paralympic Games in Paris and holds the Australian record in the long jump T20 with a distance of 7.39m.
Mats Hamberg was the lead organiser of the 1st World Championships for people with an intellectual disability – the event that later became the Global Games – held in 1989 in Harnosand, Sweden. He also served as then INAS’ (now Virtus) 1st Secretary General on the Executive Committee and was instrumental in securing the participation of athletes with an intellectual disability in the Paralympic Games.
Virtus President Robyn Smith paid tribute to the contribution that both had played in the organisation and to sport for people with an intellectual impairment, and on behalf of everyone at Virtus, we send our thoughts and wishes to there families at this time.
