Para Taekwondo Poomsae was first introduced at the international stage at the 5th World Para Taekwondo Championships in Moscow, Russia in 2014. This was following a Memorandum of Understanding signed between Virtus and World Taekwondo during the 4th World Para Taekwondo Championships held in Lausanne, Switzerland in 2013.
The competition form is very popular among the World Taekwondo Member National Associations and the number of athletes with an intellectual impairment in the World Taekwondo P20 Sport Classes is growing rapidly. The sport appeared as a demonstration event at the 2015 Global Games and became a full-medal event in 2019.
Poomsae (martial art forms) is a pattern of prearranged blocking, punching and kicking techniques.
